Aquariums can be astonishingly heavy when filled with water. But, as beginner aquarists, we often underestimate how much tanks weigh – at least I did. My first fish tank was 10 gallons big. So, it’s only fitting that I write on how a 10-gallon fish tank’s weight.

Don’t worry! The article won’t just be limited to 10 gallons! We will cover a lot more.

Now that I have answered the main query, let’s look at the weight and dimensions for other standard aquarium sizes. Note that these figures are for glass aquariums. Acrylic aquariums usually weigh comparatively less than those made with glass.

Does A 10-Gallon Aquarium Need A Stand?

Yes, although 10-gallon aquariums are pretty small, they definitely need a stand that lends sturdy support. A well-made cabinet should be enough most of the time. Avoid using stands or cabinets that are narrower than the width of the tank, as it will put extra stress on one side and cause leaks.

Also, make sure to inspect the wood used to make the cabinet. That’s because some woods tend to swell when wet and can compromise the overall support.

When exposed to water, woods like maple, spruce, and cedar will experience moderate shrinkage or expansion. However, mahogany, walnut, oak, and teak are incredible at resisting warping and shrinkage.

Final Words: 10 Gallon Fish Tank Weight

Here’s a quick recap for you. A 10-gallon fish tank weighs just around 11 lbs when empty. But when filled, the weight increases by 10 times – it reaches 111 lbs.

Although it’s a fairly small aquarium, to begin with, it still needs a durable and sturdy surface for support. A well-built cabinet should suffice.

We often assume that small tanks are easy to take care of. But that’s the farthest from the truth. Small tanks are a lot less forgiving with rookie mistakes. They get polluted easily and fluctuate water parameters randomly. So, be careful what you’re signing up for!
